On Saturday September 16, 2017, Very Rev. Archimandrite Demetrios, from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America gave two lectures at Holy Transfiguration Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Milton, on topics selected by His Grace Bishop Dr. Mitrofan. The theme of the diocesan retreat, being organised for the first time, was the feast of the Birth of the Most Holy Mother of God. The lecturer spoke at detail about the history of the feast, and more importantly about the role the Mother of God plays in our spiritual life, paying special attention to her protection for all Orthodox Christians.
The day started with nearly one hundred participants registering for the retreat. Most of the Serbian Orthodox clergy from Ontario were present, as well as orthodox priests and monks from our sister jurisdictions in Canada. The lectures, delivered in English, were an opportunity for attendees to hear about their faith in the local language, and with the active participation of Bishop Mitrofan and clergy. Following the lectures a question period covered a wide spectrum of topics, with His Grace adding input in the field of his specialty - the New Testament.
The talks were followed by a tour of the Holy Monastery. The first Diocesan retreat concluded with a vespers service in the monastery church. An audio recording of the talks is attached. The next retreat, to be held in Serbian, is expected during the Nativity fast.
